East Asian sand storm database integration and preliminary diagnostic analysis of atmospheric mechanism

Taiwan is located to the southeast of mainland China. Weather conditions in the boreal seasons (including winter and spring) favors dust transport from China to Taiwan. Some high PSI days in Taiwan during spring season are considerably linked to the southward transport of dust storm cases. The “mud rain” event occurred on March 12th 1995 as well as on April 3rd 2007 characterizes two typical cases under the influence of dust transport from China to the south. This project aims at updating Dust Storm Database at EPA (Environmental Protection Administration) by adding dust storm cases occurring in 2006 and 2007. Through a summarized analysis of dust storm cases, we’ve proposed a mechanism for Asian dust storms invading Taiwan. Meanwhile, we’ve established a procedure for dust weather predictions. Besides, since Taiwan is not located in the dust storm birthplaces or in the major transport paths. Local influence by dust storms is much less significant as compared to Mongolia, northern China, Korea, and Japan. To avoid confusion, we suggest the term “dust weather’ or “dust haze” when used in Taiwan.
